This door is part of the Museum of Traditional Architecture in Dubai. I wrote about our visit to the museum previously, as one of my Wednesday Wanders, but didn’t include this photo.
The Museum was originally a royal palace, now restored and preserved as an example of the traditional architecture of Dubai, before steel and glass took over what was once a small desert community. When we visited, we had the place to ourselves and a security guard took us from room to room, his pride at the accomplishments of his home country evident in the way he showed us around.
As you can see, the door is ornately decorated wood and, I can attest, is very heavy. IÂ love the screen decorations, and the way the colours of plaster and stone recall the sand that still surrounds the city, perched on the edge of the Persian Gulf.

Beautiful photograph, Helen. It must have been an amazing tour.
It was – quite different than much of what you see in Dubai 🙂
Quite impressive and I love the decorative work above.
Sounds like my kind of tour 🙂
Thanks Norm – it was a really interesting tour 🙂
I like the combination of dark door and light, airy-looking decorative swirls.

Thanks Janet – I really loved the architecture and the colours, I find I have similar ones in my own home (though it’s nowhere near as grand!)
Helen – this is so beautiful, elegant…impressive!
Thank you 🙂 In a place known for glitz and glamour, it was nice to be reminded of a simpler, more elegant time.
This is an amazing set of panels surrounding this door! The intricately ornate artwork really made this special. 🙂
Thank you! I loved it too – there were panels like that all over the palace. I’d love to have something similar in my own home one day 🙂
This would be amazing to have one on the wall or maybe in a window pane. 🙂
Yes, they’re works of art in themselves, aren’t they? 🙂
